15. Indoor Exhibition “REFORM” presented by Washington Sculptors Group
deadline: Friday, March 13

Washington Sculptors Group
Invites artists to submit work for Indoor Exhibition “REFORM”
At the Workhouse Arts Center-Gallery W-16
A Program of Lorton Arts Foundation

MAY 13 – JUNE 27, 2009

The word “reform” generally implies a transformation from an imperfect or transgressive state to one of improvement or acceptability. The largest problem with this notion is figuring out whose definition of “perfect”, “imperfect”, “improvement”, and “acceptability” to use.

The works in Reform should broadly explore the complicated concept of change implied in the title. There are three “categories” which may be useful to consider in creating or choosing works for submission. Works can consider personal reform, a change in one’s habits or fundamental nature away from a given definition of imperfection and towards a prescribed social acceptability. They can also reflect upon institutional reform, or a change in the mission and goals of a place. Specific reference can be made to the site of the exhibition and the adaptive re-use of the Lorton Workhouse. Finally, artists can also use the idea of reform in a strictly formalist sense, exploiting the change in structure or function of a sculptural object, whether through the repurposing of a found object or a change in the physical appearance of a previously completed work.

Saturday, January 10, 2009 (Snow Date 1/24/09), 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (Lunch included).

Bollman Bridge Elementary 8200 Savage-Guilford Road, Jessup, MD 20794.

$30 per participant, $20 TAI Seminar Alums (special discount for artists that completed the 2007 or 2008 TAI seminar only).

How are you communicating with your target audience? Is it through fliers, your web site, word of mouth? This intensive workshop will help you decide the most effective way to communicate with the people who want you at their school and venue, the tone and content of your pieces, as well as cost effective ways to reach them. The workshop will begin with a panel Q&A session with a PTA representative, an educator, an artist, and a professional marketer/designer.

Afterwards, there will be breakout groups for the panel to critique your marketing pieces and a hands-on tutorial on designing a fabulous marketing piece to help you reach and get your audience. The workshop will offer an exclusive networking and tabling opportunity for registered artists to interface with educators in Anne Arundel, Howard, and Montgomery County Public School Systems during their 2009 Arts Integration Conference.

Register today by contacting YA’s Kristen Turner at 410-837-7577 ext. 14 or kristen@yamd.org.
