----------------------------------
Cory Oberndorfer is selling out. Not that he had far to go. Opening Friday, January 9th at the Gallery at Flashpoint, Flavor of the Month is the latest in his series of roller derby and candy-inspired paintings. The work draws upon the aesthetics and iconography of popular graphic design and advertising techniques to reveal Oberndorfer’s devotion to the roller derby subculture.

Oberndorfer transforms roller derby skaters into icons to convey both idolization and a sense of product identity. In a palette of bright colors, the artist draws inspiration from three of his favorite things, “sweets, pop culture and bad-ass women, although not necessarily in that order.” This combination brings a playful sense of innocence to athletes who play an aggressive, full-contact sport. Acknowledging the nostalgic return of the all-female sport, Oberndorfer utilizes visuals that remain timeless, like old-fashioned candies, or those that have been re-contextualized by a new generation, such as half-tone values, sunburst patterns seen in propaganda posters and retro color palettes.

While Oberndorfer plays up the stylization of marketing clichés designed for mass production, his canvas works are by contrast meticulously hand-painted and his prints are released in small editions. The Flashpoint exhibition will include paintings and prints as well as a mural on the gallery wall, inspired by the narrow shape of the gallery. The artist’s work intentionally defies size restrictions. He admits that, “Sometimes it just needs to be bigger. An indoor billboard is hard to ignore.”

After his return, he was the President of the Academy of Arts of the German Democratic Republic for many years. This film was digitally restored in 2008 by the DEFA Foundation.

This film shows Beethoven at the height of his fame in the years 1813-1819. Patronized by his brothers, spied upon because of his democratic convictions, and deaf, his isolation is growing. Yet, his creativity remains unbowed. The ideas for the “Ninth Symphony” are stirring within him.
Horst Seemann was a German director, actor and musician. He received the German Democratic Republic’s most prestigious filmmaking prizes.

'Pacientia Patience'

Ceramic artist Carlos Beltran Baldiviezo explores the ancient tradition of balancing the tension between the Seven Deadly Sins and the Seven Heavenly Virtues in his solo artist exhibit, 'Virtue, Sin, and the Balance Within,' at The Art League Gallery, December 4, 2008 – January 5, 2009.

Pride, envy, gluttony, lust, anger, greed, and sloth are considered the Seven Deadly Sins to spiritual growth and wellbeing. Practicing the Seven Heavenly Virtues of humility, kindness, abstinence, chastity, patience, charity, and diligence supposedly will protect ones self against the temptations of the Seven Deadly Sins.

Each of the seven pairs of fourteen ceramic sculptures embodies a Sin and its corresponding Virtue. 'I've approached portraying the theme from a variety of angles.' Some pieces are whimsical and playful, others serious and stoic, some humorous, obvious, or elusive.

'Each day, we are confronted with our relationships to these sins and virtues. Do we find ourselves influenced by one more than another? Do we consciously or unconsciously seek a healthy balance, or are we dominated by one set of these highly charged emotions?'

Beltran hopes that this exhibit allows viewers to engage in a thoughtful and reflective experience with each piece – giving the audience an opportunity to contemplate where they fall on the spectrum of 'Virtue, Sin, and the Balance Within.'

Two years ago Touchstone Gallery created My Space on 7th. It’s a unique, non-juried opportunity for local artists to exhibit at Touchstone’s gallery. In a short time, My Space on 7th has become a gallery tradition.

The upcoming January exhibition, like the two before it, drew an immediate response. All available spaces (125 spaces for 300 or more artworks) were chosen within hours after registration opened. My Space on 7th is designed to tap into two significant community needs: 1) to give local, often emerging, artists the rare opportunity to exhibit at a very low investment; and 2) to offer collectors the equally rare opportunity to view new and often reasonably priced work.

This provocative seminar explores the milieu of 18th-century opéra-comique as the background to Opera Lafayette’s modern American premiere presentation of Le Déserteur (1769) on January 29 at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Through its graceful sentiment, romantic parody, intellectual radicalism, and powerful humanitarian ideals, late 18th-century opéra-comique transferred the spirit of the French Revolution to American shores and with it the first waves of European Romanticism. Popular on both continents, the works of Monsigny, Grétry, and others created the “rescue opera” and set the stage for works such as Beethoven’s Fidelio.

Opera Lafayette Conductor and Artistic Director Ryan Brown and noted musicologists and authors Professor Raphaëlle Legrand from Paris, Dr. Nizam Kettaneh, and Dr. Elise Kirk discuss examples of this popular genre, in particular composer Monsigny and librettist Sedaine’s Le Déserteur. The New York Baroque Dance Company Artistic Director and Choreographer Catherine Turocy speaks to the role of dance and the style of stage action. Musical excerpts are performed by members of the Opera Lafayette Young Artists Program and instrumentalists of Opera Lafayette.

Opera Lafayette makes its Kennedy Center debut with the modern American premiere of Le Déserteur, a brilliant example of 18th-century opéra-comique by composer Pierre Alexandre Monsigny and librettist Michel-Jean Sedaine that helped set in motion the Romantic movement in Europe and America.

A trick is played on the soldier Alexis, and the false impression that his fiancée Louise has married another disrupts his furlough. Distraught and alone, Alexis is accused of desertion and thrown into prison. When Louise visits him there, he understands that she still loves him. To her horror, Louise realizes that Alexis faces execution. The scene is interrupted by a comic episode with a jailed drunkard. Louise throws herself at the feet of the king, who is visiting his troops, and she pleads for royal clemency. After a dramatic final scene in prison, all is resolved in the public square. Lilting melodies sung in French are interspersed with dialogues and new narrations in English penned by Nick Olcott.

The performance features baritone William Sharp as Alexis and soprano Dominique Labelle as Louise, with Artistic Director Ryan Brown conducting the 31-piece, period-instrument Opera Lafayette Orchestra. The renowned baroque dance authority Catherine Turocy directs the ensemble’s stage movement, with actor John Lescault and dancer Caroline Copeland providing dramatic action. Opera Lafayette will record Le Déserteur for international release by Naxos.

Ivonne Thein
FotoGalerie, the Goethe-Institut’s newly-defined exhibition space, brings young German photography to the Washington arts scene. This second in a series of Talents exhibitions coming from C/O Berlin, the International Forum for Visual Dialogues, presents the works of photographer Ivonne Thein.
Ivonne Thein has created 14 large-format photographs of alarmingly stick-like, elegant young women in scant, silvery clothing, their faces obscured by well-tended hair, assuming near-contortionist mock-fashion poses on a floor. The artist’s digital manipulation exaggerates the effect.
The photographer’s inspiration is the Pro Ana internet movement, promoting anorexia as harmless self-starvation; 32 kilograms, or 70.4 pounds, is the weight of a French model who posed for ads condemning anorexia after nearly dying from it.
Opening reception and panel discussion “Changing Feminine Ideals, Pathological Illness, and the Power of Advertising”: Thursday, January 8, 6 – 8 pm

Hostas, often used as the border or backdrop in a garden, are the subject of Yoshimi Matsukata's solo artist exhibit of watercolor paintings at The Art League Gallery, 'A Hosta Story.' 'It may be the scientist in me that keeps going back to organic subjects.' Continually drawn back to nature, Matsukata enjoys visually portraying something previously unnoticed in her environment. The rhythm created by the abstract shapes formed by light and shadow inspired Matsukata to create this series. 'I find the colors, the curls, the deep veins in the foliage irresistible. I am particularly inspired when the sun creates a pattern of shadows underneath the foliage. I am most intrigued with hostas in the spring, when the foliage is fresh. I enjoy the sense of a new beginning.' The use of watercolor is an integral part of Matsukata's work. 'I like to work wet on wet, drop different colors on top of each other, and watch the pigments mix on paper. This often produces a granulated effect and a natural transition of color on the paper.' Matsukata's works have been exhibited throughout the Washington area, nationally, and internationally. She studied painting at The Art League School, the Corcoran School of Art, and the Washington Studio School. She holds a BA from Harvard University in Biochemistry. She feels that her work represents a combination of her two passions, visual art and science.
